Gates is expecting a breakthrough from Justin Thomas and is backing him in his Masters fantasy golf strategy. Thomas was the tour’s Player of the Year and won the PGA Championship in 2017, ascending to world No. 1 in 2018. He now ranks seventh, but he has been trending upward and has five top-10 finishes in eight tour events this season. He is second on tour in scoring average (69.617). The 28-year-old finished third at the Valspar Championship.
On the flip side, Gates isn’t so sure about the state of Rahm’s game and is fading him for the Masters 2022. The Spaniard’s only win since August 2020 was his triumph at the U.S. Open last summer, and he just lost his status as the world’s No. 1 player. He got there with his consistency, but he has finished in the top 10 just three times in eight events this season. His putter has been an issue, as he ranks 179th on tour in putts inside 10 feet (86.56 percent), 203rd in one-putt percentage (35.0) and 201st in putts per round (29.8).
