Lone Star dominates in first playoff win; Timber Creek upsets L.D. Bell

PLANO – Frisco Lone Star dominated its first-ever boys soccer playoff victory everywhere but on the scoreboard with a 1-0 victory over stubborn Lovejoy in a Class 5A Region II bi-district playoff Friday night at John Clark Stadium.

“A match like that is always worrisome,’’ Lone Star coach Clinton Hollingworth said. “Possession doesn’t win games and one silly mistake can be the difference in this type of game.’’

Lone Star (18-1-3), a first-time champion of District 9-5A, is No. 2 in SportsDay’s 5A area ranking and No. 30 nationally by MaxPreps.

Lovejoy (9-12-1), the fourth seed from District 10-5A making its sixth consecutive playoff appearance, stayed close to the finish despite playing the final 10 minutes with nine players due to red cards.

It was a combined shutout for Lone Star’s two junior keepers with Matt Trouy playing the first half and John Stottlemire the second.

Lone Star advances to the area playoff round to face the winner of Friday’s bi-district match between Adamson and Carrollton Creekview.

In both possession time and scoring chances, Lone Star enjoyed a big advantage but had nothing to show for the dominance until senior forward J.J. Hernandez’s sizzling shot from 25 yards evaded diving Lovejoy keeper Noah Nguyen on its way to the left corner of the net 5:44 before intermission.

Hernandez moving left to right took an assisting pass from Aubry Eason.

“I didn’t know that would be the only goal,’’ Hernandez said . “I thought we would score more. We have to finish better in the future.’’

Prior to the goal, Lone Star failed to convert on a pair of free kicks from just outside the penalty area.

Lone Star’s back line set the tone for the possession advantage with accurate passing to steadily move upfield.

It took an acrobatic save from Nguyen to deny Lone Star a second goal 10 minutes into the second half. A crossing pass from Aubry Eason found the forehead of freshman Tucker Eason eight yards from goal. Nguyen had little time to react to the shot labeled for the top corner, but managed to bat it away.

In the waning moments and down two players, Lovejoy junior defender George Salcedo-Garcia made a desperation stop on his goal line.

“Lovejoy was like a wall and it wasn’t our prettiest game, but we found a way to win,’’ Hollingworth said.
