Kominfo Evaluation of Indosat and Tri Merger, What’s Up?

Telset.id, Jakarta – The merger of Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison 3 Indonesia (Tri), received attention from Kominfo. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is currently evaluating the merger of the two companies.

Through an official statement received on Wednesday (13/10/2021), a spokesman for the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, Dedy Permadi, explained that Kominfo has sent a team to evaluate the merger of Indosat and Tri.

“Until now, the evaluation process by Kominfo on the merger of Indosat Ooredoo and Hutchison 3 Indonesia (Tri), is still ongoing,” explained Dedy.

Dedy did not explain the reason why Kominfo evaluated the merger of Indosat and Tri. The former UGM lecturer only said that the evaluation was related to several things, such as consumer protection.

“The evaluation includes aspects of consumer protection, telecommunications operations and optimizing the use of radio frequency spectrum,” said Dedy.

Actually, the plan to evaluate the merger of Indosat and Tri was mentioned by the Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate. Through its official statement on Friday (17/9/2021), the Ministry of Communications and Informatics conducted an evaluation after the merger was announced.

“Indosat and Tri Baru officially merged after obtaining government approval in accordance with applicable regulations. Of course, all aspects will be evaluated by the government, including spectrum allocation,” said Johnny.

However, Johnny still welcomes the consolidation that has been carried out and considers this step a good breakthrough.

“We welcome the consolidation of the telecommunications industry, specifically cellular telecommunications. This is a good breakthrough for the efficiency of the telecommunications industry as well as accelerating Indonesia’s digital transformation,” said Johnny.

Evaluation of the Indosat Tri Merger

As is known, Indosat Ooredoo and Tri finally officially merged in September 2021. The company resulting from the USD 6 billion merger or equivalent to Rp 85 trillion will use the name Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.

The merger decision was announced in an official statement released by Ooredoo QPSC (Ooredoo) and CK Hutchison Holdings Limited (CK Hutchison) on Thursday (16/9/2021).

In a statement, Ooredoo and CK Hutchison announced the signing of a definitive transaction agreement for the planned merger of their respective telecommunications businesses in Indonesia, PT Indosat Tbk (Indosat Ooredoo) and PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia.

The merged company was named PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Tbk (Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison). It is planned that the merger process will be completed by the end of 2021. [NM/IF]
